Austrian Heritage in Bjelovar

Austrian Heritage in Bjelovar

n the year marking the 270th anniversary of Bjelovar’s founding, the Bjelovar City Museum presents the exhibition "Austrian Heritage in Bjelovar," dedicated to the historical circumstances of the city's creation and the legacy that has permanently shaped its identity.

Bjelovar holds a special place in the history of the Military Frontier. Unlike cities that evolved gradually from older settlements, Bjelovar was founded in 1756 by a planned decision of the Viennese Court to serve as the headquarters for the 5th Križevci and 6th Đurđevac regiments of the Varaždin Generalate. A decree by Queen Maria Theresa initiated the history of a city that soon became a vital military, administrative, and economic hub within this part of the Habsburg Monarchy.

Through museum artifacts, archival materials, and recent research, the exhibition presents various aspects of Bjelovar’s centuries-long connection to the Habsburg state framework, from the Habsburg Monarchy to Austria-Hungary. It pays special attention to how this heritage shaped the city’s urban development, institutions, economy, and the daily lives of its inhabitants.

The exhibition does not aim to recount the entire history of Austrian administration in Bjelovar; rather, through selected objects, documents, and stories, it seeks to offer a glimpse into the various layers of Austrian heritage. Each exhibit tells its own story, and together they create a picture of a city whose development was inextricably linked to broader Central European historical processes. The distinctiveness of Bjelovar and the value of its heritage lie precisely in the intertwining of local history and the European historical context.
